Anthropic is seeking an Engineering Manager to lead the Search Platform team, which builds the search infrastructure powering Claude's web search capabilities across claude.ai, the API, and agentic surfaces. The team owns the complete search stack: indexing, retrieval, ranking systems, and serving infrastructure at production scale.
Search is fundamental to how Claude answers questions about the world. The platform serves multiple user surfaces—product, research, and training workloads—often simultaneously, requiring careful capacity and quality management. The role carries significant product responsibility; with thin PM coverage, the Engineering Manager helps define what good search experiences look like alongside building them.
Key responsibilities include leading and growing the engineering team through rapid scaling, owning the platform strategy and roadmap, establishing search quality metrics and driving relevance improvements, operating the platform at scale while balancing product traffic against research demand, and maintaining high standards for reliability, latency, and cost. The manager will wear a product hat when needed—prioritizing search experience, sequencing launches, and representing search in product discussions. Cross-functional collaboration with product, research, and infrastructure teams is essential, as is hands-on technical involvement in design reviews, incident response, and deep dives into relevance regressions.
The ideal candidate has significant experience managing engineering teams through growth and change, direct hands-on experience building or operating search systems at scale (indexing, retrieval, ranking, query serving), and enough technical depth to review designs, read code, and engage credibly with senior engineers. A product mindset and comfort making product decisions independently are required. The candidate should have a proven track record running high-scale, latency-sensitive production systems with real reliability requirements, strong cross-functional alignment skills, and experience recruiting and closing senior engineers. Interest in AI safety and Anthropic's mission is expected.
Preferred qualifications include experience with search economics (index freshness, storage, serving costs, quality vs. cost tradeoffs), background in embeddings, ranking models, or ML-based retrieval, experience migrating traffic from vendor solutions to in-house infrastructure, and exposure to LLM products and the retrieval demands of large-scale training and inference.
