As the first SDET (Software Development Engineer in Test) leadership hire, you will establish the testing framework, standards, and AI-assisted test generation strategy that scales across the entire engineering organization. Currently, testing is distributed and inconsistent across teams—each building their own coverage, patterns, and tooling. This role exists to unify that landscape and build the team that executes at scale. You will hire and lead the SDET team from the ground up, defining the technical bar and ensuring every engineer you bring on builds on standards and direction you establish from day one. Your scope is cross-organizational: the framework and standards you set become the foundation for every embedded SDET across all product groups. Key responsibilities include: setting framework standards and tooling choices before team habits calcify; establishing what "tested" means before features reach UAT; owning the AI-assisted test generation mandate, where acceptance criteria and user stories convert directly into test scripts by default; building end-to-end automation strategy across interactive web (UI), API, and Kafka eventing surfaces; prioritizing API-level integration testing for speed and resilience; designing regression test registers and coverage dashboards; defining load and performance test frameworks; and partnering with SRE on test environment strategy, including schema and config parity with production. You have designed test architecture before and can translate that judgment into team practices. You see fragmented testing landscapes and identify the two or three decisions that cascade into solutions. You prefer building standards once and hiring the team to scale them rather than executing within inherited frameworks. This role offers direct visibility with R&D leadership on strategy and roadmap, not just execution. You're building a high-bar, high-craft team intentionally, with every hiring decision yours and no lowered standards to fill seats faster.
