Salary: USD 182,800 - 247,300 / annual

Duolingo is seeking an Engineering Manager for the Notifications team, which operates within the Growth Pillar's Out-of-App Area. This team is responsible for delivering personalized messages to hundreds of millions of learners while maintaining reliable notification infrastructure. In this role, you will co-lead a cross-functional team alongside a Product Manager, partnering closely with data science and ML teams. You'll own both product impact and technical excellence, shaping strategy, running rapid experiments, and raising the bar on reliability, personalization, and delivery timeliness for one of Duolingo's highest-leverage user-facing surfaces. Key responsibilities include: - Co-leading a cross-functional team, aligning on strategy, priorities, and success metrics for features that drive user impact - Driving execution from specification through implementation, experimentation, analysis, and ongoing ownership while ensuring infrastructure reliability and scalability - Using data and rapid experimentation to inform decisions; designing A/B tests with analytics partners and translating insights into measurable product improvements - Attracting, growing, and retaining diverse engineering talent with clear expectations, coaching, and career development - Setting engineering quality standards and processes that balance speed with long-term maintainability; managing tech debt and operational excellence - Collaborating with product, design, research, and other engineering teams to deliver impactful user experiences - Defining team OKRs, ruthlessly prioritizing, and removing roadblocks Required qualifications: - Proven experience leading and managing a team of software engineers with demonstrated ability to hire, develop, and retain talent - Track record of shipping multi-engineer, multi-week+ projects with measurable business impact - Strong product instincts and comfort in experimental, data-driven environments - Excellent communication and stakeholder management across engineering, product, design, and data - Technical depth sufficient to guide architecture and implementation trade-offs and mentor engineers - Ability to work from or relocate to New York, NY Exceptional candidates will have experience leading cross-functional teams in consumer products, setting team OKRs with outsized impact on company metrics, and managing ambiguity across broad cross-functional scope.
