As Engineering Manager for Postgres, you will lead a team of engineers building and maintaining Render's Postgres product. This role combines technical leadership with product thinking, requiring close partnership with product managers and designers to translate user needs into a high-quality, scalable system used by hundreds of thousands of developers.
Key responsibilities include:
- Leading and growing a team of Postgres engineers through mentorship, feedback, and technical guidance
- Driving execution on product initiatives from ideation through launch, balancing speed with reliability and quality
- Partnering with Product, Design, and Infrastructure teams to translate customer needs into technical solutions and roadmaps
- Engaging deeply in technical discussions and guiding system design decisions
- Fostering a culture of ownership, accountability, and continuous improvement
- Breaking down complex problems into incremental milestones that deliver value quickly
- Ensuring the team maintains strong understanding of developer experience and customer impact
- Collaborating with product management, customers, and internal teams to align priorities and ensure delivery
Required qualifications:
- 8+ years as an engineer shipping products/features with downstream business impact; ideally experience with stateful services
- 2+ years managing people and developing engineers, including hiring, mentorship, and performance management
- Strong technical background with ability to engage in system design, architecture, and engineering tradeoffs
- Product-oriented mindset translating business goals into engineering roadmaps
- Ability to balance urgency with thoughtful execution
- Excellent communication and collaboration skills across engineering, product, and design
- Strong sense of ownership for team outcomes and long-term system health
Nice-to-haves include experience with developer platforms, cloud infrastructure, DevTools, distributed systems, engineering velocity improvements, and cross-functional collaboration for adoption and retention.
