Pliant is a Berlin-based European fintech specializing in B2B payment solutions. The company provides a modular, API-first platform helping businesses streamline spending, improve cash flow, and integrate payments into financial workflows. Pliant serves over 4,000 businesses and 20+ partners globally as a licensed e-money institution (EMI), issuing credit cards in 11 currencies across 30+ countries.
This is the first Engineering Manager role for Platform Core, a team of four engineers responsible for Pliant's core infrastructure foundations: Terraform, multi-account AWS architecture, IAM, and networking. You will own both the people management side and the technical roadmap for the platform team.
Key responsibilities include: owning the roadmap for Platform Core's Terraform infrastructure and multi-account AWS setup; running Platform Core as an internal product serving other engineering teams; collaborating with Security Engineering to embed access controls and compliance requirements; steering the ECS/Fargate to Kubernetes migration to completion; managing the team through 1:1s, hiring, and performance development; and coordinating with future SRE and platform functions as the organization scales.
You will bring 7–10 years of software or infrastructure engineering experience, including at least 3 years managing engineers directly. You have hands-on depth with Terraform, multi-account AWS, and container or serverless compute at production scale. You have experience running infrastructure as an internal platform with high standards for incident and change management. You have a demonstrated track record of hiring and developing engineers with specific examples of people you've leveled or promoted. You are proficient with Datadog or equivalent observability at scale, communicate clearly with technical cross-team audiences, and are proficient with AI-assisted development tools (Copilot, Claude Code, Cursor) with the same rigor reviewing AI-generated PRs as any other code.
In the first year, you'll spend initial months understanding the existing team and systems before making changes, including assessing the ECS-to-Kubernetes migration status. By mid-year, you'll have a roadmap the team believes in and Spacelift guardrails reflecting properly reviewed decisions. By year one, the compute migration will have moved meaningfully forward and Platform Core will be a team other functions actively seek out for help.
