Salary: USD 186,000 - 202,000 / annual
Muon Space, a LEO satellite constellation provider founded in 2021, seeks an Engineering Manager to lead a mechanical engineering team responsible for tailoring spacecraft platforms to specific missions. This is a hands-on hybrid role (3 days/week on-site in San Jose) split roughly evenly between people management and individual technical contribution.
You will manage and develop a team of mechanical engineers who design payload accommodations, mission-specific components, and carry each spacecraft through mechanical build, integration, and environmental testing. Responsibilities include:
- Leading, mentoring, and growing the mechanical engineering team; planning resourcing across concurrent missions and hiring as the team scales
- Developing early-career engineers through coaching, design feedback, and growth planning
- Owning mechanical deliverables end-to-end: requirements, design, build, integration, and environmental test, ensuring on-time, high-reliability delivery
- Staying hands-on by contributing designs, drawings, and analyses alongside the team and setting quality standards
- Translating customer needs into robust flight hardware in collaboration with mission formulation and systems teams
- Setting and upholding engineering standards (factors of safety, make vs. buy decisions, materials, PLM process, documentation)
- Running design reviews and test readiness reviews; owning test campaign outcomes
- Partnering with avionics, systems, thermal, structural, and production teams to optimize for performance, reliability, and manufacturability
Required: 8+ years designing complex integrated systems in harsh environments (spacecraft, aviation, automotive, robotics); 2+ years managing or technically leading engineering teams; proven track record delivering hardware to field; fluency between hands-on engineering and leadership in fast-paced environments; CAD proficiency (SolidWorks preferred) for medium-to-large assemblies; mastery of drawings, GD&T, BOMs, FAIs, tolerance and mass budgets, ECO/DCO processes; experience managing structural and thermal analysis; strong leadership and communication skills; B.S. or higher in Mechanical Engineering or related field.
Nice-to-have: spacecraft design team management/mentorship; full environmental test campaign experience (vibration, TVAC) on satellites or launch vehicles; risk-management process experience; project management experience with customer reviews, schedules, risk tracking; experience developing early-career engineers.
