Discord's Safety ML team is seeking an Engineering Manager to lead machine learning systems protecting 200M+ daily active users. The role combines hands-on technical leadership with people management, owning the detection systems that prevent abuse, fraud, and harmful content at scale.
You will build and lead a team of ML engineers, driving the technical vision and roadmap for Safety ML in collaboration with Trust & Safety, Product, Policy, Legal, and Data Science teams. Key responsibilities include hiring and coaching engineers, defining new ML capabilities, measuring model performance, and monitoring operational health of systems making millions of enforcement decisions daily. You'll own the end-to-end lifecycle of production safety models, from conception through deployment and monitoring.
The role requires deep technical expertise in machine learning systems combined with proven people management skills. You'll partner with Trust & Safety on label quality and golden datasets, work to automate manual investigations, and collaborate with other Engineering Managers to improve the broader Engineering organization.
Required qualifications: 5+ years as an ML Engineer, Data Scientist, or Applied Scientist; 3+ years as an Engineering Manager managing 5+ engineers; hands-on depth in abuse/fraud detection, content classification, behavioral modeling, graph-based modeling, or LLM-based classification; strong cross-functional communication; ability to thrive in ambiguous environments; proven track record shipping ML systems to production at scale; passion for coaching while remaining hands-on in code when needed.
