Bestow is a vertical technology platform modernizing life insurance by unifying the fragmented legacy value chain. The company enables major carriers to launch products in weeks instead of years through AI-powered automation and infrastructure. As Engineering Manager for the IAM team, you will lead a team of software engineers building the identity and access management foundation for Bestow's digital life insurance enrollment experience. The role is approximately 20% hands-on coding (accounted for in team planning) and 80% leadership, architecture, and cross-functional partnership. Technical Leadership: You will stay actively involved in system design and architecture decisions, review pull requests with high standards, own team quality metrics (test coverage, documentation, code review practices), debug alongside engineers, and identify and advocate for technical debt remediation. The IAM stack runs on Kubernetes in Google Cloud Platform with microservices written in Go using gRPC, REST, and async messaging patterns. IAM Initiative Ownership: Your first major initiative is IAM Platform Scalability—building an identity foundation enabling new enterprise customers to onboard without engineering intervention while meeting enterprise security and compliance requirements. You will lead evolution of the authorization model for multi-tenant enterprise customers, architect separation of authentication and authorization for independent scaling and policy enforcement, design a token strategy balancing security and cost, build automated user provisioning/de-provisioning, and solve for partner-specific requirements (biometric re-authentication, extended sessions, layered access policies, audit needs). Operational Health: The IAM team maintains a weekly on-call rotation; this role takes regular turns alongside engineers. You own observability, monitoring, alerting, uptime tracking, and incident response leadership for your services. Team Development: Recruit and hire engineers, partner with Talent Acquisition, own onboarding including 30/60/90-day plans, conduct growth-focused 1:1s, coach on technical and professional skills, build an inclusive team culture, and address conflict directly. Performance & Delivery: Set clear expectations, give documented feedback, run fair performance reviews, address underperformance with empathy and urgency, translate product requirements into technical plans, estimate capacity honestly, own a realistic roadmap, and track delivery metrics for monthly operating reviews. Reports to Director of Engineering. Backed by Goldman Sachs, Hedosophia, NEA, Valar, 8VC.
