Sitemate is a B2B SaaS company building software and AI agents for the construction, infrastructure, and industrial sectors. The company operates globally with 200+ employees across Australia, UK, US, and Canada, backed by Blackbird Ventures.
The Engineering Manager leads the engineering side of a product team, reporting to a Product General Manager (PGM). You will be responsible for a team of engineers, including their performance, growth, and day-to-day execution. Your core accountability is ensuring work moves from "ready to build" through to "shipped and stable" with high quality and predictable delivery cadence. Importantly, you will continue to deliver code yourself—this is not a hands-off role.
Delivery accountability is shared with a Product Design Manager (PDM), who owns product scope, design, and acceptance criteria, while you own engineering capacity, sprint planning, unblocking engineers, and process quality. You will work closely with a Tech Lead who owns technical quality and architectural direction; you focus on execution and people while they focus on technical standards.
Day-to-day responsibilities include: planning and managing sprint/cycle capacity with clear, well-sequenced work and estimates; tracking delivery progress and surfacing risk early; acting as the primary escalation point to unblock engineers; running regular 1:1s, managing SDPs and competency progression, setting goals, and giving consistent feedback; managing performance issues directly and constructively; delivering code consistently to stay sharp and maintain credibility; holding engineering process standards (test coverage, PR quality, deployment practices) in partnership with the Tech Lead; proactively communicating delivery status to stakeholders; staying aligned with the PDM on priorities and trade-offs; and escalating decisions beyond team control to the PGM.
The role operates in a fast-moving, outcome-driven environment with core values around transparency, quality, and rapid iteration. You'll work with distributed teams across multiple time zones (Australia, UK, Southeast Asia, Brazil, Canada), requiring strong async communication. The company is still establishing engineering leadership frameworks and career ladders, so you'll have the opportunity to shape how the engineering org evolves.
Key challenges include shared accountability (results through influence rather than direct control), balancing people development with delivery pace, maintaining quality while moving fast, managing distributed teams across time zones, and building organizational maturity in engineering leadership.
REQUIREMENTS:
Must Have:
- Experience managing or leading a team of engineers with direct reports or clear equivalent responsibility
- Strong delivery management across capacity planning, work breakdown, estimation, tracking, and early risk escalation
- Current, hands-on coding ability; you will still be delivering code and must understand best practices
- Hands-on background in JavaScript/TypeScript, Node.js, Angular or React, MongoDB
- Track record of growing engineers through feedback, goal setting, and career development
- Willingness to handle underperformance directly and constructively
- Comfort operating in shared accountability with product counterparts
Nice to Have:
- Experience in a scale-up or high-growth product environment
- Experience managing distributed or multi-timezone teams
- Experience improving engineering process (sprint cadence, release process, on-call)
- Practical experience with AI-assisted development workflows
Essential Tools:
- Jira or equivalent planning and tracking tool
- Confluence or equivalent documentation practice
- AI coding tools (Claude Code, Cursor, or similar)
Bonus Tools:
- AWS
- Observability tooling (Clickstack, Datadog, Bugsnag, Sentry)
