GitLab is seeking an Engineering Manager for the Core DevOps team, which owns core repository capabilities from Git command-line operations to web-based code exploration. In this role, you will build, manage, and mentor a globally distributed engineering team delivering high-quality, reliable platform capabilities and user experiences.
Key responsibilities include:
- Building, managing, and mentoring a globally distributed engineering team in a remote, asynchronous environment
- Hiring, onboarding, and developing engineers while maintaining high standards for quality, accountability, and psychological safety
- Partnering with product management, design, and cross-functional engineering teams to align technical direction, shape roadmaps, and deliver against commitments
- Guiding engineers on system architecture, code quality, performance, security, and maintainability across frontend and backend disciplines
- Managing and refining agile, remote, and asynchronous workflows to maintain delivery cadence and address blockers early
- Encouraging integration of AI capabilities and modern developer tooling into daily workflows
- Conducting regular one-on-ones, providing continuous actionable feedback, and supporting career progression through coaching
- Maintaining visibility into operational health and reliability, participating in incident management rotations as needed

REQUIREMENTS:
- Experience managing engineering teams, providing architectural guidance and technical mentorship, and building team accountability
- Background in enterprise software development, distributed systems, and software delivery pipelines
- Experience bringing together stakeholders across product, design, engineering, and infrastructure to make sound, timely technical decisions
- Track record of establishing effective engineering processes, managing delivery execution, and moving work forward in ambiguous or fast-changing situations
- Strong written and verbal communication skills with experience collaborating in remote-first, asynchronous, and globally distributed environments
- Commitment to building inclusive, psychologically safe team cultures
- Experience using AI-assisted tools and modern software workflows to improve team velocity and efficiency
