Xero is seeking an Engineering Manager - Data to lead the 'Dataverse' team, a nine-person engineering group distributed across Australia, New Zealand, and Canada. This role balances strategic leadership with hands-on technical delivery, focusing on building and maintaining core data models on Xero's data platform.
You will be responsible for designing and building core models using AWS and Snowflake infrastructure, streamlining real-time data flows and streaming architecture, and leading delivery execution for complex data platform initiatives while managing cross-team dependencies and risks. A key part of the role involves coaching senior engineers, elevating engineering standards, and supporting team adoption of DataOps practices.
The ideal candidate brings a background in data platform delivery with strong data engineering expertise and data modeling capability. You should have practical familiarity with cloud infrastructure (AWS, Snowflake) and real-time streaming technologies. Your leadership style combines delivery focus with the technical breadth to guide architectural decisions and step in hands-on when needed.
You will partner closely with product, platform, and security teams to ensure high-quality, scalable data products are delivered. The role requires proven capability in coaching senior engineers, setting clear expectations, supporting career progression, managing platform health, establishing Service Level Objectives, and leading operational performance.
The position offers flexible hybrid working arrangements based out of Sydney or Melbourne offices, with the ability to balance remote work with designated office boost days for in-person collaboration and whiteboarding sessions.
