OpenAI's Core Services organization builds and operates mission-critical online services that power production systems across the company. This Engineering Manager role leads teams responsible for highly reliable, large-scale distributed systems sitting on the critical path for OpenAI's products. You will manage and grow a high-performing team of infrastructure engineers focused on foundational production systems. Key responsibilities include leading teams that build and operate large, critical production platforms (cluster reliability, scaling, rollout safety), building and operating mission-critical distributed systems with strong operational rigor (SLOs, incident response, capacity planning, reliability), and setting technical direction for platform foundations such as workflow/orchestration capabilities, large-scale file/blob/storage services, and core service foundations. You'll partner closely with product engineering teams, adjacent infrastructure teams, and finance/cost partners to ship reliable services quickly and scale systems as OpenAI grows. You'll also coach, mentor, and develop engineers and emerging leaders, working alongside senior engineering leadership to mature operations and drive major platform initiatives. Ideal candidates have significant experience leading teams that run mission-critical infrastructure in production, experience operating mission-critical services or core distributed systems building blocks, and a track record building platform-like systems (orchestration/workflow execution, service platforms) and/or large-scale storage/blob/file infrastructure. Experience with multi-cloud environments is valuable. You should take pride in building scalable, reliable systems, improving operational health, owning problems end-to-end, and moving fast in ambiguous environments with competing priorities. This role is based at OpenAI's San Francisco headquarters, with relocation assistance available for new employees.
