Tailscale is seeking an experienced Engineering Manager to lead the Control Plane team. You will manage 2-3 product pods, each containing 2-4 engineers plus a Product Manager and Designer. Your responsibilities include providing mentorship and career development to software engineers, contributing to cross-functional product success, and providing technical direction on complex projects.
Key responsibilities include hiring and nurturing engineering talent while fostering psychological well-being and inclusion; leading a team responsible for a critical production service with operational concerns including monitoring, alerting, and on-call rotations; managing healthy conflict through design discussions and constructive feedback; collaborating across the organization on complex multi-domain projects; and driving planning across tactical and strategic time horizons.
You will help grow the engineering organization through recruiting and culture development, and work asynchronously in a fully distributed, early-stage company. The role requires substantial experience managing and mentoring engineering teams, including performance evaluations and career development. You should have a background building and operating high-availability production services, expertise managing on-call rotations and incident response, and strong technical judgment to evaluate complex design tradeoffs. Experience developing in Go is preferred. You must be comfortable working independently, giving and receiving constructive feedback, and adapting to startup dynamics.
