Tailscale is seeking an experienced Engineering Manager to lead the Control Plane team. You will manage 2-3 Pods (each containing 2-4 engineers plus a Product Manager and Designer), providing technical leadership, mentorship, and career development to your team members.
Key responsibilities include:
- Mentoring and developing software engineers, including performance evaluations and career growth planning
- Providing technical direction on complex projects and growing technical leadership capabilities within your team
- Managing a critical production service with high availability requirements, including on-call rotations, monitoring, alerting, and incident response
- Collaborating cross-functionally with Product Management and Design to implement features and address customer needs
- Hiring and recruiting to grow the engineering organization
- Fostering a positive, inclusive culture with psychological safety and constructive feedback
- Leading planning across multiple time horizons, from tactical execution to strategic direction
- Making major design decisions and moderating technical discussions
You should have substantial experience managing and mentoring engineering teams, building and operating production services, and managing on-call rotations. A highly technical background is essential—you'll independently evaluate complex technical tradeoffs while leveraging your team's expertise. Experience with Go is preferred, as it's used throughout the system. You must be comfortable working asynchronously in a fully distributed, early-stage startup environment and able to think on your feet while collaborating with highly technical teams.
