Salary: USD 185,000 - 215,000 / annual
Upside transforms brick-and-mortar commerce by applying online retail sophistication—profit measurement, attribution, incrementality—to deliver cashback and value to consumers while helping retailers acquire profitable customers. Billions of dollars in commerce flow through the platform annually.
You will lead the Consumer Core team, a full-stack group responsible for Upside's foundational functionality across Kotlin Multiplatform (KMP) front-end and Python + Java back-end. This team owns architectural foundations and security patterns that enable Consumer full-stack teams to build scalable features across the entire funnel.
Key responsibilities include:
- Create a safe, collaborative team environment that motivates high-quality work
- Operate with first-team mindset, supporting organizational success beyond your domain
- Raise engineering standards in quality, performance, execution speed, and reliability
- Coach and grow your engineers' skills and careers
- Set clear expectations while empowering autonomy and creativity
- Define and maintain team domain boundaries (authentication, event architecture, user research workflows, mobile tooling, app security, FinOps, cross-team repos)
- Champion system-level quality across reliability, scalability, security, and performance
- Ensure the consumer app platform is secure, cost-efficient, and production-ready
- Oversee team AI adoption and exploration strategy for KMP, Python, and Java platforms
- Serve as primary contact for internal partners (Product, Design, Security, Data Science)
- Represent Consumer Core in cross-functional planning and technical councils
You'll manage approximately 8 direct reports (mix of full-time and contract staff). The role is hybrid based in Austin, Chicago, DC, or NYC with required in-office attendance Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday.
Ideal candidates have 3+ years of engineering management experience, ideally in mobile or distributed API domains. You thrive scaling teams, elevating systems, and solving ambiguity. You have hands-on familiarity with mobile and API infrastructure (AWS preferred), analytical tools (Mixpanel, Runway), and development best practices (serverless, event-driven, REST, microservices, MVI, Clean architecture). You value clarity, help teams stay aligned through high-change conditions, and are interested in integrating generative AI into workflows to improve delivery speed and quality.
