Voyager Technologies is seeking an Engineering Manager, Chemicals to lead a team of chemical engineers in chemical production and energetic materials manufacturing for defense-critical applications. Based in Penrose, CO (with transition to Pueblo, CO), this role reports to the Director of Engineering and oversees the full lifecycle from process design through production scale-up and Low Rate Initial Production (LRIP).
Key responsibilities include leading and mentoring a team of chemical engineers across process design, equipment fabrication, pilot demonstration, production scale-up, and automation. You will drive engineering strategy, planning, and resource allocation in partnership with engineering and program management leadership to meet performance, cost, schedule, and quality objectives for chemical R&D and manufacturing operations.
You will oversee development, review, and approval of engineering deliverables including requirements, models, procedures, design documentation, and risk assessments. You'll implement engineering processes, best practices, and continuous improvement initiatives ensuring technical excellence and compliance with internal and government standards. The role includes representing the engineering organization in technical and program status reviews, both internally and externally, while developing talent through coaching, performance feedback, and growth opportunities that foster a culture of safety, accountability, and technical excellence.
Required qualifications: Bachelor's in Chemical Engineering or related field with 5+ years hands-on experience (or Master's with 3+ years, or 9+ years without degree); 15+ years in chemical synthesis and pilot plant operations with strong knowledge of unit operations in chemical and energetic materials manufacturing; 5+ years leading projects of significant technical scope in regulated or defense environments; 5+ years leading and supervising high-performing chemical engineering teams of 5+ engineers.
Preferred: Experience standing up new manufacturing capabilities in chemical environments; expertise in unit operations (electrochemistry, evaporation, crystallization, dewatering, drying, grinding, mixing, packaging); familiarity with industrial automation, process modeling tools (Aspen, ChemCAD, MATLAB), and CAD software (SolidWorks); demonstrated success building scalable management processes.
Travel up to 20% required, including overnights to Minden, Louisiana area. Physical requirements include ability to lift up to 50 pounds and comfort in manufacturing environments (sitting, standing, climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling).
