Salary: USD 196,000 - 336,000 / annual
Vercel is seeking an Engineering Manager to lead the team responsible for its CDN, proxy, and edge caching systems—the critical infrastructure powering performance, reliability, and cost efficiency for every customer request. This is a people management role with dual accountability: operate these systems at exceptional standards (latency, reliability, cost of goods sold) while aligning the team to product and business goals.
You will set technical direction, grow and develop engineers, and create conditions for high trust, high autonomy, and high output. Your leadership style balances technical depth with strong people management. While you'll code when it delivers the highest leverage (prototyping, unblocking), your default mode is delegation, coaching, and cross-functional alignment.
The ideal candidate brings 8+ years building and operating large-scale distributed systems, with 3+ years managing engineers (experience managing managers is a plus). You have a demonstrated track record leading CDN, proxy, caching, edge, or similar high-throughput, low-latency infrastructure. You excel at translating business goals into technical strategy and driving alignment across the organization.
You're skilled at establishing psychological safety, setting clear expectations, and delivering timely, candid feedback. You're a strong facilitator in technical conflict—listening, synthesizing, deciding, and bringing the team along. You have competence across HTTP, TLS, caching strategies, load shedding, capacity planning, observability, and cost optimization.
Bonus qualifications include experience with Go, Lua, or Node at the edge, running high-signal hiring pipelines, and collaborating with product and marketing teams on customer-facing narratives.
