Brex is an intelligent finance platform enabling companies to spend smarter across 200+ markets. The Bill Pay team is building next-generation Accounts Payable (AP) software as a core product sitting between Brex's Expense Management and Banking offerings.
You will lead a full-stack engineering team of 7–10 engineers, owning a defined portion of Brex's AP product. This is a founder-shaped opportunity: the domain is established, but the roadmap and execution path are unwritten.
Key responsibilities include:
- Building and leading the team through hiring, onboarding, and career development
- Defining the team's mandate within the Payments group—what it owns, where to invest, and how to win customers
- Setting technical and product direction, making thoughtful tradeoffs on what to build and in what order
- Shipping a high-quality, reliable, competitive AP product while balancing feature velocity with technical durability
- Fostering a people-centered culture built on enablement, trust, and context-sharing
- Partnering cross-functionally with Design and Product on scope and delivery
- Providing strong coaching, mentorship, and career development for engineers at all levels
- Bringing an AI-forward mindset to how the team builds and operates
- Translating customer feedback into engineering priorities and championing the user's voice in technical tradeoffs
You will work in a hybrid environment (minimum three coordinated days in office per week: Monday, Wednesday, Thursday) with up to four weeks per year of fully remote work.
Requirements:
- Track record of engineering leadership building and scaling customer-facing products, including hiring and growing teams
- Strong product sense and ability to make and defend product and UX tradeoffs, not just technical ones
- Staff-engineer-level technical bar; able to operate at all levels and earn technical respect of a strong engineering team
- Strong customer empathy and advocacy
- Excellent written and verbal communication
- Demonstrated coaching and mentorship of engineers across levels
- Minimum 2+ years in an engineering management role
Bonus: Accounts Payable / Bill Pay domain experience or experience in Payments domain (accounting, bill pay, credit card processing, banking integrations, ERPs, etc).
