Brex is an intelligent finance platform enabling companies to spend smarter across 200+ markets. The company combines global corporate cards and banking with spend management, bill pay, and travel software. Tens of thousands of companies including DoorDash, Coinbase, Robinhood, and Zoom rely on Brex.
You will build and lead a full-stack engineering team of 7-10 engineers owning a defined part of Brex's next-generation Accounts Payable (AP) software. This is a founder-shaped problem: the domain is established, but the roadmap and execution path are unwritten. The role sits at the intersection of Brex's Expense Management and Banking products, making it one of the most strategically important positions in Brex engineering.
Key responsibilities include:
- Build and lead a 7-10 person full-stack team, growing it through hiring and onboarding
- Define and sharpen the team's mandate within the Payments group—what it owns, where to invest, and how to win customers
- Set technical and product direction, making thoughtful tradeoffs about what to build and in what order
- Ship a high-quality, reliable, competitive AP product while balancing feature velocity with technical durability
- Foster a people-centered culture built on enablement, trust, and context-sharing
- Partner cross-functionally with Design and Product on scope and delivery
- Provide strong coaching, mentorship, and career development for engineers at all levels
- Bring an AI-forward mindset to how the team builds and operates
- Translate customer feedback into engineering priorities and champion the user's voice in technical tradeoff discussions
The role is based in Seattle with a hybrid model requiring a minimum of three coordinated days in office per week (Monday, Wednesday, Thursday). Up to four weeks per year of fully remote work is available.
Requirements:
- Track record of engineering leadership building and scaling customer-facing products, including hiring and growing teams
- Strong product sense and ability to make and defend product and UX tradeoffs, not just technical ones
- Staff-engineer-level technical bar; able to operate at all levels and earn technical respect of a strong engineering team
- Strong customer empathy and advocacy
- Excellent written and verbal communication
- Demonstrated coaching and mentorship of engineers across levels
- Minimum 2+ years in an engineering management role
Bonus: Accounts Payable/Bill Pay domain experience or experience in Payments domain (accounting, bill pay, credit card processing, banking integrations, ERPs, etc).
