Brex is an intelligent finance platform enabling companies to spend smarter across 200+ markets. The platform combines corporate cards, banking, spend management, bill pay, and travel software with AI-native automation to help founders and finance teams accelerate operations and control spend.
You will lead the Bill Pay team, a high-functioning, product-led group building next-generation Accounts Payable (AP) software. This is a founder-shaped problem: the domain is established, but the roadmap and execution path are unwritten. The role sits at the intersection of Brex's Expense Management and Banking products, making it one of the most critical engineering positions in the company.
You'll build and lead a full-stack team of 7–10 engineers, owning a defined portion of Brex's AP software. Key responsibilities include:
• Building and scaling the team through hiring, onboarding, and career development
• Defining the team's mandate within the Payments group—what it owns, where to invest, and how to win customers
• Setting technical and product direction, making thoughtful tradeoffs about what to build and in what order
• Shipping a high-quality, reliable, competitive AP product while balancing feature velocity with technical durability
• Fostering a people-centered culture built on enablement, trust, and context-sharing
• Partnering cross-functionally with Design and Product on scope and delivery
• Providing strong coaching, mentorship, and career development
• Bringing an AI-forward mindset to how the team builds and operates
• Translating customer feedback into engineering priorities and championing the user's voice in technical tradeoffs
The role is based in Brex's Vancouver office with a hybrid model requiring a minimum of three coordinated days in-office per week (Monday, Wednesday, Thursday). Up to four weeks per year of fully remote work is available.
Requirements:
• Track record of engineering leadership building and scaling customer-facing products, including hiring and growing teams
• Strong product sense and ability to make and defend product and UX tradeoffs, not just technical ones
• Staff-engineer-level technical bar; able to operate at all levels and earn the technical respect of a strong engineering team
• Strong customer empathy and advocacy
• Excellent written and verbal communication
• Demonstrated coaching and mentorship of engineers across levels
• Minimum 2+ years in an engineering management role
Bonus: Accounts Payable/Bill Pay domain experience or experience in Payments domain (accounting, bill pay, credit card processing, banking integrations, ERPs, etc.).
