Salary: USD 186,000 - 202,000 / annual
Muon Space seeks an Engineering Manager to lead the avionics design team responsible for the core flight computers, power systems, batteries, ADCS controllers, and related electronics that power every Muon spacecraft. This is a hands-on management role combining people leadership with deep technical engagement.
You will manage and grow a design-focused team while staying actively involved in architecture decisions, schematic reviews, PCB layout oversight, and design quality standards. The role spans the full product lifecycle: from architecture and design through qualification, production support, and continuous improvement across Muon's satellite platforms.
Key responsibilities include leading team growth and resource planning; owning delivery of core avionics systems; driving the avionics roadmap to improve performance, reliability, cost, and manufacturability; establishing electrical design standards and design review discipline; developing qualification and test strategies in partnership with Hardware Reliability & Test; collaborating across embedded software, mechanical, thermal, systems, and production teams; and investing in engineer development through coaching and feedback.
Required: 8+ years designing complex, high-reliability electronics in harsh environments (spacecraft, aviation, automotive, robotics); 2+ years managing or technically leading engineering teams; extensive hands-on electrical design experience including architecture, schematic capture, PCB layout, and board bring-up for mixed-signal systems; deep knowledge of avionics domains (embedded processing, power conversion/distribution, battery systems, control electronics); experience taking boards from concept through qualification and production; strong understanding of hardware/software integration and common interfaces (UART, SPI, I2C, CAN, Ethernet); excellent leadership and communication skills; B.S. or higher in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or related field.
Nice-to-have: flight heritage with avionics operated in space; radiation-tolerant electronics design; space power electronics experience; FPGA/SoC/embedded Linux experience; EMI/EMC expertise; test automation and Python skills.
Position is hybrid, requiring three days per week on-site in San Jose, CA.
