Salary: USD 218,000 - 273,000 / annual
Xero is seeking an Engineering Manager to lead high-performing software engineering teams in delivering the product roadmap while maintaining operational excellence. You will serve as a technical anchor, guiding your team to balance rapid delivery with long-term system health, ensuring small businesses worldwide have access to simple, high-quality software.
Key responsibilities include leading inclusive teams, fostering a sustainable work environment where engineers thrive, and integrating AI-native workflows across the software development lifecycle. You will work closely with Product and Design in cross-functional partnerships, emphasizing decentralized decision-making and psychological safety to enable learning and growth.
Initial focus areas include decoupling legacy monolithic systems into modern, scalable API-first microservices; embedding AI tooling across the development lifecycle to drive throughput; elevating developer experience by removing technical toil; and managing technical health, operational excellence, and incident response to maintain high service availability.
You will participate in an on-call roster to support 24/7 product availability. The role offers flexible working arrangements with dedicated boost days for team connection and strategy.
Required qualifications include a strong technical background in software architecture and code quality with experience guiding teams through system decoupling; demonstrated capability in coaching and mentoring engineers with a focus on psychological safety; proven cross-functional collaboration skills translating business goals into engineering execution plans; experience maintaining platform health and managing technical debt; and a practical mindset for adopting new workflows including AI engineering practices.
