You will lead a roughly 30-person engineering organization as Head of Engineering, focusing on raising the engineering bar and enabling a small, senior team to produce output at the scale of much larger organizations. Rather than pure headcount growth, the role emphasizes technical excellence, system quality, and architectural rigor for a platform moving real money globally.
You will manage 4–6 senior backend and platform engineers directly, with additional oversight of engineering managers and tech leads. Key responsibilities include owning the architecture and technical direction of Rain's core services, remaining hands-on in code (~30% of time) through design reviews and PR feedback, establishing engineering standards across testing, observability, and incident response, and driving reliability and auditability of money-movement systems. You will translate business goals into technical plans, communicate tradeoffs across Product, Compliance, and Finance, and partner with leadership on organizational design and technical strategy.
Ideal candidates have 4+ years building production software with 3+ years managing engineers in high-stakes environments. You should be demonstrably hands-on with recent production code experience, deep in distributed backend systems (data modeling, consistency, event-driven design), and have a track record of raising engineering standards with measurable impact. Experience carrying a pager, running incident command, and operating under regulatory constraints (SOC 2, PCI DSS) is essential. Bonus experience includes card issuing, stablecoins, onchain settlement, or leading distributed teams. The company values clear communication, comfort with ambiguity, and shipping correct solutions quickly.
