Pantheon is seeking an experienced Engineering Manager to lead the account management and identity services team. The role is hands-on and people-focused, requiring a player-coach who can make technical decisions while delegating effectively. You'll manage a team building full-stack, security-focused services for Pantheon's developer ecosystem, which is evolving to support both traditional user access patterns and AI agents as primary use cases.
Key responsibilities include: driving frontend and backend excellence across the team's services while maintaining high reliability; architecting backend systems using modern design patterns; collaborating with Product, Security, UX, and Design teams on a customer-centric technical roadmap; evaluating new technologies including agentic tooling and open-source solutions; applying security-first thinking to all development; using data and retrospectives to improve team productivity and well-being; setting high performance standards measured by roadmap success and technical excellence; hiring and coaching engineers with hands-on guidance; mentoring senior engineers through delegated leadership opportunities; and navigating difficult conversations with empathy while treating failures as learning moments.
Required qualifications: 8+ years software development experience with a strong individual contributor foundation; 3+ years direct people management experience leading teams or tech-lead roles with people ownership; proven track record launching and operating full-stack, production-scale projects with stringent SLOs; deep knowledge of identity and access management and developer-focused security products; proficiency in Go, Python, or similar languages sufficient to review code and engage in technical discussions; familiarity with cloud-native infrastructure (GCP, serverless applications, Terraform); and AI-native instincts with fluency in AI coding assistants.
Desired depth in areas such as: authorization at scale (ReBAC, ABAC, Zanzibar-style systems); multi-tenant account modeling; GraphQL API design and federation; search and indexing services; event-driven data pipelines; notification services; legacy system decommissioning; vendor evaluation and build-vs-buy analysis; and developer-facing surfaces like CLIs and public APIs.
