You will lead a small, growing engineering team reporting to the Head of Engineering. This is a hands-on engineering management role where you'll own the team's technical direction, delivery, and health while staying close to the code. You'll review pull requests, provide technical feedback, pair on problems, and ship alongside your engineers—not from the sidelines.
Day-to-day responsibilities include: owning engineering direction and delivery for your team; collaborating with product to define commitments and ensure delivery; staying technically involved through code review and technical decision-making; unblocking the team when decisions are unclear or problems arise; providing regular feedback, running 1:1s, and actively developing engineers' careers; identifying and fixing bottlenecks; surfacing problems early to the broader organization; and owning hiring for your team.
You've directly managed experienced software engineers, stayed technically involved while managing, and owned a team's delivery beyond just people management. You can give useful technical feedback, make sound engineering trade-off decisions, and have worked with product teams to turn customer problems into shipped software. You've helped engineers grow through feedback, coaching, and meaningful opportunities, and have hired engineers while raising technical or operating standards.
This role is not for someone who wants to stay out of the code or spend most time in meetings. It requires making tough technical and non-technical calls and owning outcomes. It's also not a tech lead role with a few 1:1s—developing people, giving difficult feedback, hiring, and building a healthy team are core responsibilities.
Compensation includes salary of £120,000–£150,000 plus equity, 36 days paid time off, premium healthcare, 4% pension contribution, $150 monthly learning budget, $100 wellness budget, $1K home office equipment allowance, coworking budget, and enhanced parental/adoption leave. The company is fully remote (GMT timezone required) with one annual company offsite and possible team meet-ups in London every couple of months.
