Confido is an AI infrastructure platform serving 200+ CPG brands (OLIPOP, Simple Mills, Dr. Squatch, Tropicana) to manage finance, accounting, sales, and operations in a unified system. Growing 5x year-over-year with a small team in NYC, the company is scaling rapidly and seeking its first Engineering Manager.
As the first management hire, you'll take direct ownership of a team of 6–10 engineers and define what engineering leadership looks like at Confido alongside the CTO. This is a player-coach role on a team that has never had a management layer. The engineers are strong, opinionated, and process-averse—you'll earn trust through technical credibility and by making their work visibly better.
Key responsibilities include: directly managing 6–10 engineers with 1:1s, coaching, and career growth; owning delivery for your team's roadmap with planning and prioritization; partnering with the CTO on org design, career ladders, and management practices as the team scales from 20 to 50+ engineers; staying close to the code in architecture and design reviews across Rails, TypeScript/React, and Python systems; building and running hiring loops to raise the bar; and identifying and growing future leads and managers from within.
You'll tackle problems like introducing structure to a flat 20+ engineer team without slowing them down, designing a career ladder that senior ICs respect, keeping delivery predictable while the team and product surface area double, and proving that good management is a force multiplier, not overhead.
Required: 3+ years managing software engineers directly, plus 5+ years as a hands-on engineer. You've scaled through hyper-growth at an early-stage startup (Series A/B through Series C/D or beyond) and know what breaks at each stage. You have enough technical depth to go deep in design reviews and hold your own with strong senior engineers. You have a track record of managing skeptics and winning people over through competence and outcomes. You have a bias toward lightweight process.
Nice to have: experience as a team's first manager or introducing management to a flat org; founder, founding engineer, or early employee background; experience growing ICs into managers; familiarity with Rails, TypeScript/React, or Python/ML; experience in B2B SaaS, fintech, or data-heavy products.
