CircleCI is reinventing CI/CD by building AI-native interfaces that help developers understand, trust, and act on their builds. This Engineering Manager role leads the Web Experiences team—the frontend-facing surfaces where customers interact with CircleCI's platform. You'll own the holistic user experience, directly impacting customer retention and expansion.
You will manage a high-trust, competent team while delivering meaningful product improvements at startup speed. Key responsibilities include:
**People Development:** Attract and retain diverse talent. Build psychological safety so engineers take smart risks and give candid feedback. Conduct regular 1:1s, goal-setting, and feedback conversations. Develop engineers through coaching and mentoring while improving inclusion and belonging.
**Business Value Delivery:** Ensure incremental value delivery and high-quality standards. Balance speed with sustainability—ship work you're proud of. Track performance metrics and identify optimization opportunities. Collaborate with Design, Product, and Data partners on strategic initiatives.
**Customer & Stakeholder Engagement:** Gather customer feedback and translate insights into team priorities. Ensure engineering initiatives align with business objectives and understand how customers actually use the product.
**Process & Collaboration:** Maintain transparency and efficiency across development teams, product managers, and stakeholders. Participate in broader organizational development and cross-team initiatives with the engineering management team.
**Technical Enablement:** Hold the team to an AI-native engineering standard. Use AI tools yourself to evaluate technical direction and pressure-test decisions. Help the team adopt practices that genuinely accelerate work. Grow expertise in frontend performance, reliability, and maintainable architecture. Champion observability tools (Honeycomb, Datadog) so operational data drives decisions. You don't write ADRs but ensure they get written, push back on weak reasoning, and serve as a credible tiebreaker when the team is split.
**Requirements:**
- Prior experience in a people management role
- Ability to build cohesive teams where people trust each other and hold each other accountable
- Experience delivering solutions incrementally with experimentation and iteration (not "boiling the ocean")
- Knowledge of modern software engineering practices and agile methodologies
- AI-native mindset: you use AI tools, have formed real opinions on where they help and fall short, and hold engineers accountable for using them well as part of team operations
- Technical leadership: understand and question architecture decisions based on company goals, anticipate pitfalls, mentor engineers, and raise quality through engagement in reviews and design discussions
- Strong communication skills and belief in open, honest dialogue
- Product thinking: identify what matters to developers, shape priorities, push back when direction doesn't serve users
- Action orientation and commitment to continuous improvement in a culture of open communication, strong feedback, quick experimentation, and blamelessness
- Experience leading and motivating a distributed, remote team
**Nice to Have:**
- Experience managing frontend-leaning full-stack teams with modern frameworks (React, TypeScript, etc.)
- Ability to spot quality issues and raise the bar on frontend craft
