Cardless is building a credit card and loyalty platform that consumer businesses use to engage their customers. The company powers programs for major names like Coinbase, Bilt, Qatar Airways, and Alibaba, handling real products, real cardholders, and real transaction volume at scale.
You will lead one of Cardless's product engineering teams, managing a high-performing group working at the intersection of payments, money movement, and financial infrastructure. This is a critical hire that shapes both the team and how the company builds as it scales.
Key responsibilities include:
- Leading and growing a high-performing engineering team
- Owning technical health, execution, and culture — from sprint planning to architectural direction
- Acting as a hands-on technical partner: engaging deeply in system design and complex technical decisions while implementing frameworks and processes that enable team autonomy at scale
- Partnering with the Head of Engineering on hiring strategy, technical roadmap, and organizational planning
- Working directly with external partners, compliance, and cross-functional stakeholders to translate complex requirements into reliable systems
- Bringing clarity to ambiguous situations by defining problems, setting technical standards, and building a team that moves fast without breaking critical systems
- Championing thoughtful use of AI tooling across the team — from developer productivity to system design — and helping set standards for how engineering evolves with these tools
The role is based in San Francisco's Jackson Square district and requires 5 days per week in office.
REQUIREMENTS:
- Several years of engineering management experience, ideally leading backend teams building complex, high-scale systems
- Strong technical depth: ability to credibly engage in system design discussions, challenge architectural decisions, and earn trust of senior engineers
- Experience in fintech, payments, credit or debit card infrastructure, or money movement; understanding of compliance and regulatory realities in this space
- Track record of scaling both teams and systems — growing people, defining processes, and building cultures that ship
- Strong cross-functional instincts; comfort navigating ambiguity alongside product, compliance, operations, and external partners
- High standards and commitment to quality in code, communication, and outcomes
- Excitement about how AI is reshaping software development and demonstrated track record of putting these tools to work
