GitLab is seeking an Engineering Manager to lead the Agent Execution group within its AI organization. You will manage 10+ engineers across three teams—Agent Tools, Agent Observability, and Runner Execution—each anchored by a staff engineer. The group builds foundational infrastructure for AI agents to run safely and effectively across GitLab's platform, including work on sandboxing, container isolation, observability systems, and the Model Context Protocol (MCP) server.
Key responsibilities include leading distributed teams across frontend, backend, and AI engineering; hiring, onboarding, and developing engineers at all levels; partnering with product and UX to translate ambiguous problems into shipped milestones; contributing substantively to technical design for agent safety and scale; establishing practical standards for the group's use of AI tools; coaching engineers through ambiguity in a fast-changing space; and representing the group across GitLab's AI organization.
You will bring experience managing distributed engineering teams and working through technical leads and staff-level engineers. Strong technical judgment developed through hands-on engineering is essential, along with fluency in modern AI coding tools and agent harnesses. You should guide teams in applying AI to software engineering workflows and technical decision-making, deliver results in fast-paced environments with ambiguous requirements, and commit to coaching and developing engineers in a positive, inclusive environment. Experience with AI product deployment, sandboxing, container isolation, infrastructure security, observability systems, reliability engineering, or languages like Python, Ruby, Go, or TypeScript is helpful.
The team is distributed across three continents and partners throughout GitLab to make the GitLab Duo Agent Platform the backbone of GitLab's AI features. A Senior Engineering Manager currently leads the group on an interim basis and will support your onboarding. This is an opportunity to lead a consequential group as AI transforms how software is built.
