Decagon is a conversational AI platform enabling enterprises to deploy AI agents for customer support and operations. The company works with industry-leading customers like Avis Budget Group, Block (Cash App/Square), Chime, Oura Health, and Hunter Douglas, powering millions of user interactions across voice, chat, email, SMS, and other channels.
As Engineering Lead for Strategic Deals, you will own the technical execution end-to-end for 1–3 of Decagon's largest customer deployments, operating as the founding CTO for each engagement. You'll partner directly with customers' senior engineering and product leaders to understand their requirements and translate them into technical solutions.
Key responsibilities include: owning the complete technical build from proof-of-concept through close and post-close stabilization; driving technical requirements with customer leadership and building internal champions; identifying and de-risking technical challenges early; translating bespoke customer needs into generalizable product improvements; and tech-leading a pod of 1–3 engineers per deal, setting direction, ensuring delivery, and mentoring team members.
You'll work across all technical workstreams—infrastructure, agent design, model evaluation, research, and production reliability—and sit at the center of product strategy, shaping both individual deployments and the core product roadmap.
The ideal candidate has 5+ years of software engineering experience, ideally as a technical leader or ex-founder. You're comfortable with customer-facing work, thrive in high-stakes environments with ambiguity, can quickly assess technical trade-offs under pressure, and ideally have experience productionizing agentic systems. Decagon is an in-office company in San Francisco, though this role is based in New York City.
