Platform9 is seeking an Engineering Lead to build and manage the Backup & Disaster Recovery (DR) group within their Private Cloud Director platform. This is a hands-on technical leadership role combining individual contribution with team management.
You will own the design, development, and delivery of core backup and DR features including backup, restore, replication, and continuous data protection (CDP) capabilities. Key responsibilities include architecting storage-driver interfaces for multiple vendors, building storage-independent replication technology for cross-datacenter consistency and performance, and leading a small team of engineers while providing technical direction, code reviews, and career guidance.
You'll drive engineering decisions aligned with business objectives around performance, reliability, and cost. You'll collaborate with Product and Support teams to define requirements, validate real-world scenarios, troubleshoot production issues, and conduct root-cause analysis on complex distributed-systems failures. You'll also contribute to architecture and roadmap discussions for the storage and data protection stack, and establish engineering best practices around testing, automation, documentation, and operational readiness.
Required qualifications: 8+ years of software/systems engineering with significant focus on DR, backup, restore, or replication technologies. Prior experience leading or mentoring a team (formally or informally). Strong understanding of storage stacks (FC, iSCSI, NVMe, RBD, DRBD) and RPO/RTO concepts. Hands-on experience with CDP, snapshot-based or log-based replication, and storage systems (block, file, or object). Solid systems-level software development skills in Rust, C/C++, Go, Java, or Python. Experience with distributed systems, storage stacks, or virtualization/cloud infrastructure. Strong debugging and problem-solving for data-critical, low-tolerance-for-error systems.
Nice-to-have: Direct experience with enterprise DR/backup platforms, exposure to CDP-based DR-as-a-service (VMware Site Recovery Manager, HPE Zerto), familiarity with backup-target/appliance architectures, hypervisor/hyperconverged infrastructure experience, public cloud DR/replication services (AWS, Azure, GCP), and storage protocol expertise.
Platform9 is a well-funded, globally distributed company with 30,000+ nodes in production at major enterprises including Cloudera, EBSCO, Juniper Networks, and Rackspace.
