Flock is an AI-first insurtech company using telematics, AI, and real-time data to help fleet customers prevent crashes and improve driver safety. Recently acquired by Admiral (May 2026), Flock combines the backing of the UK's leading motor insurer with startup energy and speed.
You'll lead the Acquisition team as an Engineering Lead, owning delivery, operational reliability, and developer experience. This is a hands-on technical leadership role where you'll ship production TypeScript code while providing technical coaching and mentorship to engineers—not traditional line management. You'll work closely with the PM to translate business goals into technical scope and delivery plans, and shape how the team leverages AI tools and coding agents to ship faster without compromising quality.
Key responsibilities include:
- Own delivery and technical quality for the Acquisition team, shipping features that directly impact how fleets discover and choose Flock
- Write high-quality, well-tested TypeScript and own end-to-end production delivery
- Lead by example through code, design discussions, and pairing; mentor engineers to raise standards
- Drive improvements to developer experience, CI/CD, observability, and release practices
- Make pragmatic trade-offs balancing reliability, performance, and cost across AWS services
- Integrate with and contribute to RESTful APIs via API Gateway
- Use AWS experience (Lambda, API Gateway, SQS, EventBridge, DynamoDB, S3, CloudWatch) to support and extend team services
- Work with infrastructure-as-code tools like Terraform or CDK
- Co-own team success with the PM, jointly leading projects from scoping through impact measurement
- Champion practical testing, type-safe APIs, and pragmatic patterns
- Set the example on AI-assisted development and coach engineers on effective AI tool adoption
The role is based in Central London (hybrid, minimum 3 days/week in office near Moorgate/Liverpool Street), though client site visits can substitute for office days.
REQUIREMENTS:
Essential:
- Proven ability to co-lead a team alongside a PM, taking joint ownership of delivery, quality, and outcomes
- Strong hands-on engineering ability; comfortable shipping high-quality, well-tested TypeScript in production
- Significant experience with AWS and modern serverless (Lambda, API Gateway, SQS, EventBridge, DynamoDB, S3, CloudWatch) or equivalent cloud platforms
- Pragmatic approach to technical decisions, balancing reliability, observability, performance, and cost
- Track record of raising engineering standards through code reviews, pairing, design discussions, and shaping technical direction
- Strong communication skills; able to represent the team upwards and translate business goals into clear technical scope
- Experience improving developer experience, CI/CD, release practices, and delivery cadence
- Confident daily use of AI development tools with experience helping teams adopt them without quality loss
Preferable:
- Experience aligning technical direction beyond immediate team with senior stakeholders and other leads
- Familiarity with infrastructure-as-code tools (Terraform or CDK) and track record improving operational resilience
- Practical experience designing event-driven, distributed systems and navigating eventual consistency trade-offs
- Background in fast-moving, product-led environments where commercial impact drives decisions
- Track record of creating conditions for engineers to step up through ownership and growth opportunities
