Monzo is a fintech company on a mission to make money work for everyone, offering personal and business bank accounts, savings, investments, pensions, and credit products in the UK. The company has built a customer-centric digital banking platform serving millions of users.
As Engineering Director, Security, you will lead a global security engineering organization of 30–50 engineers and leaders, reporting directly to the CISO. This is a deeply technical leadership role focused on embedding security as an invisible, foundational property of Monzo's platform rather than treating it as a reactive function.
Key responsibilities include:
• Drive the secure-by-design mandate by transitioning from reactive security to proactive architectural invariants. Ensure core platform primitives (compute, storage, networking, identity) are built with inherent security properties that cannot be bypassed.
• Identify and eliminate systemic security risks by solving fundamental, cross-cutting problems at the architectural root.
• Partner with product and software engineering teams to embed security culture into Monzo's product development process.
• Cultivate an engineering-first culture where security engineers are primarily software engineers. Deliver high-leverage tools and frameworks that enable teams to move at speed without compromising security.
• Manage and develop a high-performing group of software engineering leaders and senior individual contributors, building a diverse organization that tackles complex security challenges.
• Collaborate with engineering leaders across the company to establish security best practices and standards.
• Work closely with the CISO, CTO, and Product leadership to advise on long-term business health and align the security roadmap with Monzo's global mission.
• Set high bars for engineering effectiveness, operational excellence, performance, rigor, and inclusive leadership.
The ideal candidate is a deeply technical software engineering leader with a track record of building and leading high-performing infrastructure, platform, or distributed systems engineering organizations. You should have moved into high-scale leadership without losing your technical edge. A traditional security background is not required; instead, Monzo values exceptional engineering leadership, organizational design, platform thinking, and strong technical judgment.
