Bestow is a vertical technology platform serving major life insurers, modernizing a centuries-old industry through AI-powered infrastructure. The company enables carriers to launch products in weeks instead of years by unifying fragmented legacy systems.
As Engineering Director, you will lead the Insurance Product Configuration & Enrollment Platform Core team, managing 2–3 Engineering Managers and approximately 20–30 engineers across multiple teams. You report to the VP of Engineering and own outcomes spanning both your direct reports and cross-functional partners.
You are a highly technical strategic leader comfortable with distributed systems, microservices architecture, and regulated-domain quality standards. Your primary technology stack includes Golang, Python, TypeScript, PostgreSQL, gRPC, REST, asynchronous messaging, event sourcing, and Kubernetes on Google Cloud Platform.
Key responsibilities include defining and driving technical vision for your teams while aligning with Bestow's platform strategy; pushing configuration-driven repeatability to reduce per-partner customization; providing architectural oversight across the configuration layer, enrollment workflow engine, and event-sourced domain services; and leading cross-team initiatives that span beyond your direct reports.
You bring 8+ years of software development experience and 5+ years of progressive engineering management, including managing managers. You have proven expertise designing, building, and operating distributed systems at scale; deep PostgreSQL knowledge; strong backend service experience; and demonstrated success transforming teams to embrace agentic engineering. You advocate for automated testing and TDD, can go deep technically when needed, and excel at hiring, mentoring, and retaining top talent. Life insurance or regulated-industry experience is a strong plus, as is experience delivering implementations for enterprise partners under contractual commitments.
