Salary: USD 262,000 - 348,500 / annual
Hex is seeking an experienced Engineering Director to lead the strategy, execution, and growth of its AI context platform. The role involves leading multiple engineering teams focused on the Context Studio—a surface where users understand how AI agents interact with data, identify quality issues, and actively improve the context driving better outcomes.
Key responsibilities include:
- Leading an organization of multiple teams working on Hex's context platform
- Serving as people manager for line-level engineering managers, tech leads, and senior individual contributors
- Recruiting and scaling a team to at least 15 software engineers
- Driving technical strategy, reviewing designs, and occasionally contributing hands-on work
The team tackles foundational questions in AI: detecting and debugging agent reasoning failures, structuring and managing business context, balancing human-in-the-loop systems with autonomous improvement, and integrating the context layer with the broader AI ecosystem.
Hex's product is a web-based notebook and app authoring platform built with TypeScript and React on the frontend (Apollo GraphQL, Redux), and TypeScript/Express/Apollo GraphQL on the backend (Postgres, Redis, Kubernetes). Infrastructure uses Terraform, Helm, and AWS.
Required qualifications:
- 5+ years leading engineering teams on complex, data-intensive, or AI-driven SaaS products
- Exceptional ability to identify and design technical abstractions for ambitious product visions
- Deep curiosity and strong intuition about state-of-the-art AI agent behavior and context systems
- Proven track record managing people, including managing managers and scaling high-performing teams
- Clear playbook for building high-performing teams: setting technical standards, hiring talent, creating environments for exceptional work
- Deeply technical leader willing to roll up sleeves when necessary
The role is full-time, based in the New York office with expectation to be in-office at least twice weekly (Tuesdays and Thursdays are main in-person days). Hex offers competitive salary, equity, comprehensive health benefits, and flexible PTO.
