Still Bright is commercializing RACER (Rapid and Complete Electrochemical Reduction), a proprietary hydrometallurgical process that offers a viable alternative to traditional copper smelting. The process delivers fast, complete copper extraction while recovering precious and critical co-products in a closed-loop system with precise control and radically reduced environmental impact. Backed by top-tier investors including Breakthrough Energy Ventures and Material Impact, the company is scaling from pilot execution toward commercial deployment. The Engineer II – Electrochemistry is an experienced engineer responsible for designing, developing, and iteratively improving the RACER electrochemical cell. This is a hands-on, largely self-directed role with technical guidance from senior engineers. The engineer sets cell test objectives, drives build–test–learn cycles to improve performance, efficiency, and durability, and translates results into next-generation cell designs for demonstration scale. Key responsibilities include: performing test planning, cell assembly, test setup, execution, data analysis, and troubleshooting; optimizing operating parameters and defining operating windows; defining and driving build–test–learn campaigns including long-duration (1000-hour) stability and durability testing; owning cell-level performance metrics (voltage, current efficiency, energy consumption, degradation); developing and maintaining cell test plans, performance models, mass and energy balances, and equipment specifications; specifying, building, and commissioning cell test apparatus and instrumentation; translating bench and subscale results into scalable cell designs; analyzing electrochemical and analytical data to inform go/no-go decisions; mentoring junior engineers and technicians; supporting electrode, membrane, and electrolyte characterization; and maintaining laboratory and pilot safety standards. Success in the first 12 months means owning one or more cell durability workstreams with measurable improvements in performance and efficiency, validated cell designs supported by reliable long-duration stability data and clear failure-mode understanding, and design outputs that directly inform the demonstration-unit roadmap and scale-up economics. Required qualifications: Master's degree in chemical engineering, electrochemical engineering, materials science, chemistry, or related field (or bachelor's with commensurate experience); minimum 4 years of relevant experience in electrochemical cell or stack development, process engineering, or related laboratory/industrial discipline; strong experimental design and data-analysis skills including time-series and long-duration test data; strong command of mass and energy balances, performance modeling, and equipment specification; experience in design verification, DFMEA, and experimental techniques (DOE, statistical analysis); hands-on comfort with laboratory and pilot electrochemical equipment; strong documentation discipline and clear technical communication; collaborative, self-motivated approach suited to startup environments. Strongly preferred: direct experience developing electrochemical cells or stacks (electrowinning, electrolysis, electrolyzers, fuel cells, batteries); experience with long-duration stability/durability testing and translating findings into design changes; strong understanding of thermodynamics, heat transfer, fluid flow, and materials; fluency with potentiostats/galvanostats and electrochemical measurement techniques (CV, EIS, chronopotentiometry); pilot-scale or continuous-process experience including commissioning and troubleshooting at scale.
