Salary: USD 130,000 - 160,000 / annual
Flock Safety is hiring an Embedded Software Engineer III to join the Device OS Team for aviation hardware products. This role focuses on ensuring absolute operating system stability for mission-critical drones and supporting dock infrastructure.
You will gain hands-on experience across low-level driver development, system bring-up, OS customizations, and feature implementation. Working closely with senior engineers, internal stakeholders, and external partners, you'll build expertise in embedded Linux and kernel development while directly contributing to device performance and reliability.
Key responsibilities include:
- Low-level kernel space development, bootloaders, and BSP (Board Support Package) bring-up
- Linux kernel driver development for SPI/I2C/UART interfaces
- Memory management, power management, and IRQ handling
- Direct debugging of physical devices and deployment of stable OS builds to hardware
- Collaboration across electrical engineering, QA, and cloud teams to align hardware and software behavior
- Bootloader customization and early bring-up concepts
Required qualifications:
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or related field
- 2+ years of embedded software development on consumer devices
- Practical experience with embedded Linux-based systems (Yocto, BuildRoot)
- Strong C and C++ programming skills
- Linux kernel internals knowledge (memory management, power management, IRQ handling)
- Linux kernel driver experience for SPI/I2C/UART
- Bootloader development and customization experience
Desired qualifications include firmware development for Audio DSPs, Qualcomm chipset bring-up experience, and knowledge of OpenWRT and networking protocols (TCP/IP, D-Bus).
This is not a high-level application or UI development role—it focuses entirely on low-level kernel work. It's also not purely theoretical; you'll directly debug physical devices and run CI builds. This is a collaborative role requiring constant cross-functional alignment.
