Zoox is seeking an Embedded Software Engineer to join the Firmware Drive Systems team. This team owns the critical path from autonomous trajectory planning to vehicle motion execution—translating AI-generated trajectories into drive control actuator commands (motor torques, brake torques, steering angles, etc.), arbitrating between multiple control sources (nominal AI stack, in-house remote controller, and test sources like drive-by-wire and trajectory spoofing), and continuously monitoring the safety of trajectory execution and drive control ECUs. The role involves developing production-quality, safety-critical code for complex dynamic systems. Drive Systems engineers are responsible for ensuring that Zoox autonomous vehicles operate safely and reliably across all operational contexts: in-service passenger transport, depot staging, critical testing on test tracks, and post-assembly validation. Key responsibilities include: - Writing and maintaining embedded firmware for vehicle drive control systems - Implementing safety-critical control logic and monitoring systems - Collaborating with hardware teams to integrate motor controllers, brake systems, and steering actuators - Developing arbitration logic between multiple control sources - Ensuring code quality, reliability, and adherence to safety standards - Testing and validating drive control systems across various operational scenarios This is a hands-on role for engineers passionate about hardware integration, real-time systems, and autonomous vehicle technology. The position offers the opportunity to work on mission-critical systems that directly impact vehicle safety and performance.
