Infleqtion is a global quantum technology company developing quantum computers, sensors, and networks to solve complex problems. The company is expanding its UK engineering team and seeking an Embedded Software and Systems Engineer to develop software and firmware for optical and atomic physics systems used in next-generation atomic clocks and positioning/navigation/timing (PNT) systems. In this role, you will develop embedded software and firmware for microcontroller-based systems using Rust, C, or C++. Key responsibilities include creating low-level device drivers and interfaces for sensors, actuators, and peripheral hardware; integrating microcontrollers and electronics with higher-level software; implementing real-time control, monitoring, data acquisition, and communication functions; performing board bring-up and debugging hardware-firmware integration issues; developing test software and automated tools in Python; and validating firmware and systems against defined requirements. You will diagnose and resolve functional, timing, reliability, and performance issues, work with colleagues to define verification and validation plans, follow embedded software best practices, and produce clear design documentation. You'll support products throughout the development lifecycle from prototypes through deployment and maintenance. You will collaborate with multidisciplinary teams including software engineers, electronics engineers, physicists, and technicians. You'll communicate technical risks and design decisions clearly, adapt to changing requirements, and take ownership of assigned work from requirements definition through delivery. Core requirements include a bachelor's degree in electronics, engineering, computer science, or related field; several years of embedded software/firmware development experience; proficiency in Rust or embedded C/C++; experience with low-level drivers and hardware control; familiarity with microcontroller peripherals (SPI, I²C, UART, CAN, USB, Ethernet, ADC/DAC); understanding of embedded-system concepts; experience integrating and debugging hardware-firmware; strong analytical and problem-solving skills; proficiency with hardware debugging tools; Git version control; and excellent communication skills. Desirable qualifications include ARM microcontroller experience, real-time operating systems (FreeRTOS, Embassy), real-time feedback and control loops, bootloaders and firmware update mechanisms, low-power and safety-critical design, automated hardware-in-the-loop testing, Python proficiency, full embedded-software development lifecycle experience, CI/CD tools, and PCB bring-up experience. This is a permanent, full-time position at the Kidlington, Oxford office with flexible working allowing up to 2 days per week remote work. Up to 10% travel, including international, may be required.
