Apex manufactures satellite buses (spacecraft platforms) at scale, combining software, vertical integration, and hardware designed for manufacturing. The company serves the rapidly growing commercial space industry by providing platforms that enable earth observation, communications, and other critical missions.
As a Sensor Systems Engineer, you will own sensor products across their complete development lifecycle—from clean-sheet concept through qualification and production deployment. You'll serve as the technical authority and Responsible Engineering Authority (REA) for sensor subsystems, driving all aspects of development, testing, and field performance.
Key responsibilities include:
**System Ownership**: Lead sensor products from conceptualization through architecture, design, analysis, prototyping, qualification, and production. Support production as REA, providing technical solutions and documentation when issues arise. Manage project budget, schedule, and multidisciplinary team tasking.
**Test Engineering**: Own verification and validation activities for sensor subsystem requirements. Develop and execute qualification and test campaigns, including test plans, procedures, and reports. Collaborate on test stations and ground support equipment (GSE/STE). Perform failure investigations and root cause analyses, incorporating lessons learned into future designs.
**Technical Development**: Conduct system- and component-level trade studies to optimize performance, cost, schedule, and technical risk. Collaborate across structures, thermal, optics, avionics, software, GNC, manufacturing, mission assurance, and supply chain. Present technical work at design reviews and create thorough engineering documentation.
Required: Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Optical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Software Engineering, Applied Physics, or related field. Hands-on experience developing, prototyping, integrating, and/or testing multidisciplinary systems. Demonstrated hardware, project, or product ownership. Strong test engineering fundamentals. Leadership and organizational skills. Comfort with clean-sheet subsystem architecture in open design spaces. Self-motivated, collaborative mindset.
Preferred: 1–2 years aerospace, automotive, or technical product development/test experience. Master's degree in relevant field. Sensor systems design/test experience. Design for Manufacturing (DFM/DFMA) familiarity. Satellite systems and space environment knowledge. Full hardware product lifecycle experience. Project management tools proficiency.
