Salary: USD 90,000 - 180,000 / annual
Lab37 Robotics is seeking an Electrical Systems & Harness Design Engineer to own the electrical distribution system, system schematics, and wire-harness design and release for robotic food-production systems. This is a hands-on technical role that bridges electrical architecture and manufacturing, requiring ownership of designs from schematic and harness development through prototype, validation, supplier build, production release, and field support.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead the reconstruction and migration of existing electrical system design into a database-driven enterprise E-CAD platform, including custom components, libraries, templates, connectivity rules, drawing formats, and automated outputs; verify migrated designs against existing systems.
- Translate system architecture, requirements, and interface definitions into detailed system schematics, interconnect definitions, harness designs, pinouts, wire lists, BOMs, and manufacturing/installation drawings; own accuracy, maintenance, configuration control, and production release.
- Collaborate with electrical system architect and cross-functional teams (mechanical, PCBA, firmware, software, field service, manufacturing) to resolve component/connector selection, routing, packaging, grounding, shielding, strain relief, and serviceability details.
- Support hands-on prototype builds, system integration, and validation; conduct continuity, insulation-resistance, voltage-drop, power-up, and communication testing; drive electrical and interconnect issues to root cause; maintain alignment between released documentation and physical systems.
- Partner with harness suppliers and production teams on DFM/DFA, first-article builds, workmanship/inspection requirements, component substitutions, quality issues, engineering changes, and prototype-to-production transition.
The role is based in Pittsburgh with five-day-per-week onsite work. Lab37 Robotics develops robots for direct-to-customer food production, operating in a rapidly growing market (US online food delivery expanded 10X in five years, from $10B to $100B).
Requirements:
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent practical experience in Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics, Mechanical Engineering, Robotics, or related field, plus 5+ years of experience designing and releasing electrical distribution or wire-harness systems for robotics, automotive, aerospace, industrial automation, or similarly complex electromechanical products.
- Proficiency with database-driven electrical design or harness-engineering platform, including custom component creation, library management, drawing and BOM generation, and configuration-controlled release/engineering-change processes.
- Demonstrated experience producing complete, buildable harness documentation packages: system schematics, harness drawings, connector definitions, pinouts, wire lists, BOMs, and assembly/installation documentation.
- Strong understanding of wire, cable, connector, and circuit-protection selection; current capacity and voltage drop; grounding and shielding; thermal derating; EMI/EMC; separation of power, motor, sensor, and communication circuits; UL/NEC requirements.
- Hands-on experience building, integrating, testing, and troubleshooting electrical systems; ability to communicate clearly across engineering, manufacturing, suppliers, technicians, and other technical stakeholders.
Desirable Skills:
- Direct experience with Zuken E3.series, particularly electrical-system migration, custom-device creation, library administration, automated reporting, or E3 environment deployment.
- Experience designing harnesses for moving or harsh-environment equipment: high-flex routing, vibration, tight packaging, abrasion protection, sealed connectors, washdown, chemical exposure, repeated service access.
- Familiarity with IPC/WHMA-A-620 harness-workmanship practices: crimping, depinning, pull-force testing, continuity testing, inspection, rework.
- Experience with industrial/robotics communication interfaces: CAN/CAN FD, Ethernet, USB, RS-485, motor/encoder connections, sensor/camera interfaces.
- Familiarity with PLM and ECO workflows, DFMEA or fault analysis, electrical-safety or regulatory requirements for commercial robotic/industrial equipment.
