OpenAI's Early Access Program (EAP) team is hiring a Deployment Engineer to lead technical engagements with customers testing frontier AI capabilities on real-world use cases. You'll work at the earliest stage of product development—when capabilities are still emerging, tooling is evolving, and the path from promising technology to valuable application is undefined.
You will be a hands-on builder and technical partner to customers and internal research/product teams. Your responsibilities include: engaging deeply with strategic customers to understand their goals and constraints; translating emerging model capabilities into scoped use cases and working prototypes; prototyping rapidly with customers and research teams through experiment-driven iteration; designing and supporting evaluations that reveal model behavior, solution quality, and failure modes; owning end-to-end early access program execution from customer onboarding through synthesis and launch decisions; and aligning Research, Product, Engineering, GTM, Legal, Security, and Marketing teams by communicating risks, tradeoffs, and recommendations clearly.
You'll manage multiple high-stakes customer engagements simultaneously, help customers navigate technical ambiguity and difficult decisions, and translate their experience into actionable feedback for internal teams. Success means turning frontier capabilities into real-world customer value and high-quality research signals. You'll develop reusable technical approaches, improve how OpenAI learns from customers, and provide strong perspectives on what should be built, refined, or scaled.
Required qualifications: 4+ years of software engineering or equivalent technical experience with meaningful customer-facing delivery and production system ownership. Demonstrated ability to rapidly turn ambiguous ideas into working prototypes and carry strong approaches through to reliable solutions. Proficiency in Python and/or JavaScript/TypeScript, comfortable with modern front-end and back-end development, and familiar with cloud deployment. Practical AI and LLM depth, including experience reasoning about model behavior, designing evaluations, and building production-oriented AI applications. Strong product and customer judgment, ability to own problems end-to-end, and excellent communication skills with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
The role is based in San Francisco with a hybrid work model of three days in-office per week. OpenAI offers relocation assistance to new employees.
