Atoms is building Physical AI—real-world robots for industries including food, mining, and transport. The company integrates hardware, software, AI, operations, and manufacturing to deploy autonomous systems at scale. As Director of Vehicle Integration, you will lead the engineering group responsible for developing, testing, and deploying vehicle platforms. Your team owns the hardware-in-the-loop and bench validation capabilities that validate autonomy software against real vehicle interfaces, the bring-up and commissioning processes that transition vehicles from kit to fleet, and serves as the engineering backstop for field issues. Key responsibilities include: **Off-vehicle validation**: Design and build modular hardware-in-the-loop and bench test capabilities that validate software releases against real vehicle interfaces. Ensure modularity so configurations reuse harness breakouts, power, sensor interfaces, and logging paths. **Integration architecture**: Own the autonomy integration on the development fleet, including electrical architecture, harnesses, mounting, sensor and compute placement, power distribution, drive-by-wire and actuation interfaces to base vehicles, and fault/degraded-mode handling. **On-vehicle bring-up and commissioning**: Develop build instructions, technical drawings, calibration procedures, and production scripts for development vehicle builds and retrofits. Establish commissioning as a formal gate in the process. **Cross-functional collaboration**: Interface with robotics teams on release specifications, vehicle operations on fleet availability and field issues, hardware engineering and manufacturing on build execution, and OEM/supplier partners. This is a player-coach role requiring hands-on technical leadership of senior engineers and technicians alongside hiring and developing new team members. You must have deep expertise in vehicle networks (CAN, CAN FD, LIN, Automotive Ethernet), drive-by-wire and actuation integration, electrical and harness architecture, embedded compute and sensor integration, and hardware-in-the-loop validation. Experience converting bespoke per-vehicle engineering into repeatable, documented processes is essential. Prior experience on L3/L4 autonomous driving programs or L2+ production ADAS programs is required. The role requires five days per week onsite in San Francisco with travel to test and deployment sites. Physical requirements include lifting up to 50 lbs, working at roof level and under vehicles, and maintaining a valid driver's license with clean driving record.
