IonQ is the world's leading quantum computing platform and merchant supplier, delivering integrated quantum solutions across computing, networking, sensing, and security. The company has achieved 99.99% two-qubit gate fidelity and set world records in quantum computing performance. IonQ's quantum computers are helping customers including Amazon Web Services and AstraZeneca achieve 20x performance results in drug discovery, materials science, financial modeling, logistics, cybersecurity, and defense. We are seeking an experienced Director of Systems Software to lead our quantum systems software organization based in Oxford. You will manage a team of approximately twenty software engineers with expected future growth, responsible for developing the full-stack software that powers our quantum computers. This includes real-time control and monitoring systems, intermediate representation and quantum compiler layers, and application demonstrations. The role combines technical leadership with organizational development. You will specify the software stack architecture as independently developed and released components, establish and drive development, DevOps, release, and third-line support processes, and grow the team into a world-class organization capable of supporting both internal and external customers. Our quantum hardware uses trapped-ion qubits controlled by electrical signals and laser light, driven by real-time FPGA systems and networked equipment. The software stack is built primarily in Python and Rust. You will work closely with skilled software engineers and world-leading quantum scientists to plan and manage software development. Key responsibilities include accelerating delivery of software projects aligned with the R&D roadmap, leading the definition and evolution of internal team processes and DevOps practices as the stack matures, and collaborating with other teams to develop stronger cross-team interfaces and processes. Previous exposure to quantum systems is not required; we seek an experienced full-stack software manager who can scale technical teams and establish robust engineering practices.
