SnapLogic is seeking a Director of Platform Engineering to own the platform that powers every SnapLogic service: the control plane, data layer, and operational tooling that keeps systems healthy in production. This is a hands-on technical leadership role combining deep technical expertise with people management.
You will set the architectural direction for reliability, performance, and scalability across SnapLogic's distributed systems, which currently run approximately 50 MongoDB clusters holding over 60TB of data. You will own the zero-downtime SLA, drive root cause analysis, and own SRE process improvements. You will build and grow an engineering team, delegate technical ownership, establish leads, mentor reports, and foster a high-performing culture.
Key responsibilities include:
- Platform ownership and architecture: setting direction for control plane services, reviewing critical designs, making build-versus-buy decisions, and maintaining hands-on depth in coding and code review
- Engineering leadership and team building: managing team productivity and health, owning hiring and budget forecasts, promoting career growth, and resolving conflict early
- Reliability and production support: accountability for SLA, incident response, turning incidents into durable improvements, and managing customer escalations
- Cloud-native infrastructure: deep Kubernetes expertise (operators, custom resources, networking, IAM), leading migration from EC2 to Kubernetes, and treating developer self-service as a product
- Data layer strategy: owning MongoDB footprint including query tuning, schema reviews, shard operations, upgrade planning, and capacity planning; spreading expertise across the team
- AI leadership: championing AI adoption throughout the SDLC, designing and deploying AI agents to automate engineering workflows, and raising developer productivity
- Cross-functional partnership: working with application teams, SRE, support, and field teams; translating platform work into business terms; serving as credible spokesperson to customers
This is a hybrid role based in San Mateo, CA, requiring two days per week in the office.
REQUIREMENTS:
- 10+ years building and operating production backend systems, including enterprise SaaS or PaaS
- 5+ years leading and managing engineering teams, including on-shore and off-shore teams
- Strong programming fundamentals, ideally in Java and/or Python, with comfort picking up new languages and stacks
- Deep experience operating distributed systems in production: debugging, profiling, capacity planning, incident response
- Track record of taking systems from design through production rollout and owning them after launch
- Solid grasp of databases (relational or NoSQL), including query performance, indexing, and schema design trade-offs
- Deep understanding of distributed systems: HTTP protocols, distributed caching strategies, observability
- Experience being accountable for an availability SLA on a customer-facing platform
- Hands-on experience running Kubernetes in production at scale, ideally Amazon EKS, including troubleshooting cluster, networking, and workload issues
- Experience with GitOps delivery (ArgoCD) and infrastructure as code (Terraform or equivalent)
- B.S. or M.S. in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or equivalent practical experience
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Experience with cloud infrastructure (AWS preferred), containers, and CI/CD
- Familiarity with observability tooling (metrics, tracing, structured logs) and SRE practices
- Experience implementing continuous delivery and cloud deployment solutions
- Multi-tenant public and private cloud experience
- Hands-on experience operating MongoDB or another NoSQL database at scale: sharding, replica sets, query profiling, index tuning
- Agile project and release management
- Record of accurate, fast decision-making under production pressure
