Carbon is a trailblazer in additive manufacturing (3D printing) technology, enabling creators to produce high-value parts at scale. The company's customers produce millions of parts monthly, many of them unique and customized using powerful automated software tools. As Director of Software Engineering, you will lead and grow the software engineering organization, overseeing critical development projects that integrate software with hardware, design tools with production systems, and large factories with cloud infrastructure.
Key responsibilities include:
- Lead and grow the software engineering organization with focus on high-level strategy, technical architecture, and team management while maintaining hands-on understanding of code and infrastructure across the stack
- Strategize and execute the vision for automating custom part design and preparation in a complex ecosystem involving customers, data providers, and component manufacturers
- Drive improvements to subscription-based hardware value through enhanced performance, UX, reliability, and diagnostics
- Ensure development tools evolve to maximize team productivity and quality of life
- Collaborate with executive leadership and Product Management to align engineering initiatives with business objectives
- Enhance and scale existing architecture supporting diverse applications from dental products to automotive parts to customized sports equipment
- Ensure high availability and reliability of global factory services, minimizing production outages while maintaining strict performance and cost standards
Required qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or related field
- Experience developing and delivering software-enabled hardware products and cloud-based software solutions
- Familiarity with technologies including AWS, Linux, C++, Kubernetes, Terraform, React, WebGL, PostgreSQL, ElasticSearch, and Bazel
- Proven leadership experience, ideally in manufacturing or similar tech-driven industries
- Ability to inspire and manage diverse teams
- Strong strategic and analytical skills with track record of leading software solutions powering commercial/industrial hardware and software
- Excellent communication skills with ability to drive toward clarity and simplicity
The role is based in Sunnyvale and requires onsite presence 5 days per week.
