Volta is a vertically integrated AI infrastructure platform company building the compute utility layer for the AI era. The company has secured $10B in strategic partnerships, Series A funding from Andreessen Horowitz, and a $5B AI Infrastructure Fund, with 100+ employees across London, Palo Alto, and New York. You will lead Platform Engineering across EMEA as Director, acting as deputy to the VP of Platform Engineering based in Palo Alto. You own the European engineering teams and their delivery against the platform roadmap, partnering closely with the VP to run one coherent organization across two continents. Key responsibilities include: leading EMEA platform engineering teams and owning delivery; reorganizing existing European platform engineers into a local structure while maintaining continuity; growing the region across multiple capability teams and building the team lead layer; representing Platform Engineering in EMEA and stepping in for the VP when needed; staying hands-on in architecture and design reviews; owning reliability, operational quality, on-call practices, and incident response; managing the boundary between platform software and underlying hardware/fabric/site layers; integrating security throughout the development lifecycle; and being credible with regional customers. You bring a track record of building and leading software engineering teams (ideally 20+ people across multiple teams), experience reorganizing existing teams and moving people into new reporting structures, engineering leadership that sets direction and owns delivery (not pure people management), demonstrable understanding of cloud infrastructure (virtualization, storage, networking, multi-tenancy, bare metal), working knowledge of GPU and fabric hardware, experience taking software from early stage to production, and the maturity to deputize for senior leaders across distance and time zones. Nice-to-have qualifications include direct IaaS or cloud platform experience at scale, background at neocloud/hyperscaler/GPU cloud/HPC environments, familiarity with the current stack (KVM, QEMU, Ceph, SPDK, BGP, VXLAN, Kubernetes, PXE, Flatcar, Go, Python, Rust), multi-region engineering organization experience, experience integrating inherited teams, exposure to building higher-level services on infrastructure platforms, fluency with AI-assisted development, and experience leading teams under ISO 27001 or SOC 2 compliance. The role requires being based in or willing to be on-site in London with travel across a distributed US and EU organization.
