Justworks is seeking a Director of Payroll & Tax Implementation to lead a strategic operations function that bridges complex tax compliance with commercial growth. This is a leadership role responsible for building and scaling a high-performing payroll and compliance team while serving as a strategic partner to go-to-market teams.
Key responsibilities include architecting scalable implementation frameworks that operationalize tax and compliance requirements, enabling sales velocity without sacrificing regulatory rigor. You will establish payroll operational governance across all implementation activities, ensuring compliance with multi-state tax registrations, wage and hour requirements, FLSA standards, and accurate payroll tax setup. The role encompasses oversight of quarter and year-end processing, federal/state/local tax reconciliations, W-2/1099 issuance, and audit-ready documentation.
You will design and maintain internal controls, audit procedures, and compliance documentation to minimize payroll errors and regulatory violations. This includes partnering with Compliance, Legal, and Tax teams to incorporate federal, state, and local tax law changes into implementation processes, providing operational guidance to internal teams, and serving as an escalation point for complex payroll and tax matters. You'll address payroll tax inquiries, collaborate with tax authorities on notices and audits, and maintain data integrity by auditing clients' payroll data and tax filings.
Additionally, you will lead operational governance framework development for third-party administrator (TPA) integrations, establish control matrices and data validation procedures, and support SOX/SOC 2 compliance initiatives. The role requires managing complex client migrations and platform transitions with high operational rigor while advocating for commercially viable solutions. You'll collaborate with Product and Sales leadership to translate operational complexity into clear value propositions that foster client trust through predictable, accurate transitions.
