Checkr is a data platform powering safe and fair decisions through AI verification. The company serves over 140,000 customers including Uber, Airbnb, DoorDash, and Anthropic. Checkr is recognized on the Forbes Cloud 100 2025 list and is a Y Combinator 2024 Breakthrough Company.
You will build and lead Checkr's tax function from the ground up, owning the full tax lifecycle while serving as a strategic partner across the organization. Reporting to the Controller, you will partner closely with Legal, Accounting, FP&S, Treasury, and Corporate Development.
Key responsibilities include:
- Own global tax strategy across direct and indirect tax, including federal, state, local, and international jurisdictions; build the function, team, and vendor ecosystem to support it
- Lead quarterly and annual income tax provision, including documentation and disclosures
- Oversee all direct tax matters: income tax compliance, transfer pricing, R&D credits, and tax attribute planning
- Own indirect tax strategy and compliance, including sales and use tax
- Partner with Corporate Development on M&A tax due diligence, deal structuring, entity rationalization, and post-close integration
- Serve as trusted tax advisor to Legal, Accounting, FP&S, and Treasury on entity structuring, ETR forecasting, cash tax planning, and intercompany matters
- Prepare the tax function for public company readiness, including SOX-compliant processes
This role is ideal for a tax leader who wants to shape a function rather than inherit one, and who thrives on the operational rigor and strategic complexity of preparing a growth company for life as a public company.
Checkr operates a hybrid model with hub locations in Denver, San Francisco, Nashville, and Santiago. Individuals are expected to work from the office 3+ days per week. In-office perks include lunch five times weekly, commuter stipend, and snacks/beverages. A relocation stipend may be available for those willing to relocate to a hub location.
REQUIREMENTS:
- 12+ years of progressive tax experience, including a combination of Big 4 and in-house roles
- Deep expertise in U.S. federal and state income tax, ASC 740, and indirect tax compliance
- Experience leading the tax provision process end-to-end, including coordination with external auditors
- Demonstrated experience supporting or leading tax workstreams in M&A transactions
- Strong cross-functional collaboration skills, particularly with Legal, Accounting, and FP&A
- CPA, JD, or Master's in Taxation
- A-player mindset with strong bias for action: raise the bar, move with urgency, stay resilient through ambiguity, take ownership to deliver meaningful outcomes
