Strava is a global community platform for active people with over 200 million athletes across 185+ countries. As Director of Engineering for Trust & Safety, you will lead the engineering organization responsible for keeping Strava's community safe and compliant. This includes building systems for proactive detection and moderation of harmful content, age assurances, regulatory reporting, and content moderation at scale using AI/ML technologies. You will own the complete engineering roadmap, strategy, and delivery for Trust & Safety systems. Key responsibilities include leading and developing a team of engineers, setting technical strategy for LLM-based auto-moderation systems to detect harmful content, identifying and driving technology investments that create a durable trust and safety foundation, and partnering closely with Product, Policy, Legal, Design, and Operations teams on critical priorities. You'll coach engineers at all levels and career stages, including managers, while building an inclusive, high-accountability team culture. The role requires hands-on fluency with AI/ML approaches to content moderation, including LLM-based classifiers and automated flagging systems. You'll balance short-term deliverables with long-term technology investments while managing multiple engineering teams, including managers and staff-level engineers. The ideal candidate brings 5+ years of Trust & Safety experience, 5+ years of management experience (including at least 2 years managing managers), 10+ years of systems engineering experience, and a track record delivering trust and safety initiatives for consumer-facing applications with user-generated content. You should be empathetic, business-aligned, and skilled at navigating ambiguous, high-stakes situations while maintaining strong cross-functional relationships. This is a hybrid role based in San Francisco with a requirement of at least 3 days per week in the office. Strava is backed by top-tier investors including Sequoia Capital, TCV, Madrone Partners, and Jackson Square Ventures.
